E-Waste in India

E-Waste in India

India among with China and Nigeria is becoming a e-waste dumping ground. This not a good news. E-waste means electronics products which are now obsolete due to new technology, or end of life of the product. Where does these products go then? These products from the developed nations from America and Europe go to developing countries like India for disposal. These are exported to India under the pretext of 'donation'. E-waste disposal in the U.S. cost $20 whereas in India it costs $2 because of cheap labour. The workers are majority children.

Medthod of diposal

Before dumping these products in land fill which has devastating impact on human and animal life, products are deassembled. All the circuit boards are removed to extract cheap gold. Yes gold. First this board is melted, to remove all electronic components then gold is extracted. While melting these boards poisonious fumes are released of which the elployee are unaware of. The fumes contain high level lead, cadmium which causes retarted mental growth in kids and nervous system problems in adults.

India Plans Laws on E-waste Management

The Indian government plans to enact new rules that makes a producer of electrical and electronic equipment responsible for the collection and appropriate disposal of e-waste generated at the end of life of its products. The draft of the new rules, called the E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2010, was made available for public comment on the Web site of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

These rules have to be followed by manufacturer and also those who import. The proposed rules will also ban the import of used electrical and electronic equipment for charity in the country. The proposed rules will also ban the import of used electrical and electronic equipment for charity in the country. Currently rules are laid only on the waste generated from manufacturing industries and not waste generated from products at the end of their life cycle.

Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), Greenpeace, and other organizations have been pushing the government for the adoption of better e-waste rules. The government may also have to pick up the cost for recycling of unbranded products which account for about 40 percent to 50 percent of electronics products sold in the country. There will also be a lot of e-waste already in the market on the date the new rules come into force. The government calls it "historical waste", and MAIT expects that the government will help finance that part of the clean-up operation as well.

The UN report

Action to collect and recycle e-waste by India and China and other developing countries to avoid the hazardous of e-waste Mountains is greatly necessitated as noted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Data from 11 developing countries have been used to estimate current and future e-waste generation that shall include old and decaying desk and laptop computers, printers, digital photo and music devices, refrigerators, mobile phones, pagers, toys and television sets.

E-waste generation is now at over lakh of tonnes a year from refrigerators, personal computers, TVs, printers and mobile phones in India. The report on e-waste generation in India also electronic waste from old computers shall to a high level of 500% in India, and between 200 and 400 percent in South Africa and China by the year 2020.

Also the level of e-waste from leftover mobile phones is expected to be about 18 times higher than its 2007 levels. It will have serious cost for the environment and public health and its bad effects can be seen in today's environment as well and with time the consequences shall only increase.
